With all the buzz about solid state, you’d think it was a brand new technology. In fact, solid state storage technology has been changing the way consumers communicate, create and share information for more than a quarter of a century. What’s new now is the way business and technology trends are influencing the adoption of new solid state storage technology designs throughout computing environments.

What Is A Solid State Drive
Solid state is an electrical term that refers to electronic circuitry that is built entirely out of semiconductors. The term was originally used to define those electronics such as a transistor radio that used semiconductors rather than vacuum tubes in its construction. Most all electronics that we have today are built around semiconductors and chips. In terms of a SSD, it refers to the fact that the primary storage medium is through semiconductors rather than a mechanically spinning magnetic media such as a hard drive.

Total cost of ownership—that’s the real value proposition for solid state storage. Although still in the early stage, solid state storage solutions can offer:

Lower power consumption compared to hard drives

Improved performance

Improved environmental balance

But also know that solid state storage technology can present its own set of challenges:

Lower life expectancy – Flash-memory cells will often wear out after 1,000 to 10,000 write cycles for MLC, and up to 100,000 write cycles for SLC, while high endurance cells may have an endurance of 1–5 million write cycles – HOWEVER many log files, file allocation tables, and other commonly used parts of the file system exceed this over the lifetime of a computer.

Lower capacities – most SSDs are significantly smaller than HDDs.

DRAM-based SSDs – require more power than hard disks, when operating; and they still use power when the computer is turned off, while hard disks do not.

The ideal use for SSDs is either in light weight portable applications, where more rugged and lighter weight drives are needed, or on systems that need very fast smaller temporary storage (such as a Photoshop Scratch disk)

Solid State Drive Cautions:

Solid State Drives DO NOT require defragmentation. It may decrease the lifespan of the drive.

Turn off or disable any applications or utilities that defragment the SSD – Antivirus, Anti Spyware, Optimize Utilities, etc. or set them to not defragment your SSD.

The drive is actually pretty shiny. It has a lot of air vents on the top, back and bottom. It has a “clean” shape. No funky or obnoxious look. It’s really nice on my desk. The inside:I liked that drive because it is totally quiet. No fan. I think it uses some new green power drives so it might help with the electricity bill The drive gets barely warm even in useFor backup:I have one drive to backup a PC laptop. I also connected it my mac and Time Machine automatically recognized it. The drive is connected through the USB port. The backup speed is pretty good for USB. It see about 25MB/s.I definitely recommend this drive to anyone looking for great value. It’s small, quiet, reliable and quite good looking.

Product is well designed and seems well made; lightweight and attractive. Setup was easy plug-n-play. Data transfer rates are satisfactory and the WD My Passport Essential Portable doesn’t need external power, and disk size.

I wanted to have portable drive with maximum capacity available and with no need to connect power cord to it. This portable one would just need USB cable for data transfer and you are done. As this is portable drive, and it is meant to be carried, whenever needed… just to be on safer side keep your important stuff as backup in DVD or other drives.. so that if accidently this portable drive gets physically damaged by hit or drop, you should be safe and incur minimal important data loss..

he Simpletech Duo Pro 1TB drive is a solid external drive. It actually contains 2 500 MB drives in one case. Due to this, it is considerably larger then some other 1 TB drives. However, this does give the drive some flexibility. It has a switch on the back that allows you to change the drive between RAID 0 and RAID 1. In RAID 0 mode, you get the full 1 TB, faster then a standard drive, but if one of the drives goes south, you lose everything. In RAID 1 mode, you only get 500 GB, but if one of the drives dies, you won’t loose your data. You can’t switch back and forth without reformating your drive though. The drive comes with a USB 2 cable, but no eSATA cable, which is a bit of a disappointment. Others have complained about broken cases when they bought theirs, but my case was fine. It also comes with some backup software, but as it is for Windows only, I haven’t tried it.The RAID capabilities are about the only thing that stands out with this drive. I got a good deal on mine and have been happy with it.

A luxurious glass-like frame with gracefully sculpted edges is fused to a rose-black bezel, giving a soft hint..

The picture is generally good on digital channels. Analog channels have a lot of static. The unit lacks the number of connections in and out to use with other devices.I wish the screen can be brighter. The TV HD tuner does it job well, the digital channels are very clear. I have compared this one with other brands of monitor & it seems that the Samsung is a little pricy but offers the best picture quality.

I have been working hard to find a reasonably priced large monitor for photographic work. This is my 3rd Samsung SyncMaster 245BW. I need accurate color and none of the three could be calibrated by any method (including fudging all the controls and using the best sensor based calibration systems). Reds always oversaturate. The worst problem is that there is NO vertical position where you can see the whole image accurately. 1/4″ of vertical motion and the top gets darker and the bottom lighter or visa versa. If you are a graphic artists, stay away. For general purpose use it is a good deal.

As a notebook user I feel Samsung SyncMaster 245BW failed to notify consumers of irreversible changes in XP OS by using this monitor & drivers on notebooks as a primary or second monitor. Samsung doesn’t offer online support for resolving problems with monitors. Returning the monitor doesn’t solve being left with a blank screen on a high end graphics gamer notebook. Samsung SyncMaster 245BW lack of probelms solving suppoprt with new products is very disappointing.
